DEFINE THE TASKS PERFORMED BY THE BUSINESS

If you intend to use Definer to plan your business activities we strongly recommend that you start by building a task map and adding the relevant information as described in the section Attach info to tasks

Definer works on the principle that businesses (and organisations) can be defined by the tasks that need to be performed to enable the business to meet its objectives.

Once the objectives of the business have been specified they can be broken down into tasks as shown above.

Each task can be broken down further into component tasks that 'define' the parent task. This process can be repeated until the tasks listed at the bottom are totally unambiguous.

The diagram below shows the first task on the map above being broken down further

The arrows at the bottom of each box indicate that the box has been broken down further. By simply double clicking in a box with an arrow its component tasks are revealed in the boxes.

While the above method of displaying the breakdown of tasks is easy to understand it only allows a limited amount of information to be displayed on the screen.

Definer therefore offers other ways of displaying the same information. On the left is an example of one of the alternative display formats.

When you are finished breaking down the tasks, the composite list of lowest level tasks will be a comprehensive definition of what has to be done to enable the business to achieve its objective(s).

Definer enables you to produce this list on screen or to print it.
